As an infant, Noah was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that forms in nerve tissue. Noah’s spinal cord was affected, and he now uses a wheelchair. Despite these challenges, Noah is a 9-year-old boy who loves to be active.
When his mom, Ivona, saw a friend’s Facebook post about Heroes Circle, her interest was piqued. Noah had always wanted to try karate and this was his chance. Not only would he be learning therapeutic martial arts, but also meditation and breathing techniques to help him manage stress, his emotions and physical pain. He has tried all kinds of adaptive activities including rock climbing and skiing, however, they are costly and focus solely on physical activity.
Noah immediately settled into his first class. His wheelchair was not a barrier when Sensei Bob pulled up a chair and showed Noah how to get started. This small gesture was a big help as it allowed Noah to see how he can follow along with the class from his wheelchair. In no time, he was enthusiastically participating. Ivona was moved by how inclusive the Heroes Circle is and loves seeing how empowering the experience has been for Noah, increasing his resilience to new challenges.
After a few months, Noah is catching on and loves to practice with Dad at home. Heroes Circle has quickly become the highlight of his week and he is so disappointed if he has to miss it – even for a birthday party! It is incredible to see how his confidence has grown – giving him a sense of Power. Peace. Purpose.
